Was Jesus Married? A Careful Look at the Real Evidence
by Rev. Dr. Mark D. Roberts

Reverend Doctor Mark Roberts looks at evidence of whether or not Jesus was married. He says that most of these claims started coming out after the novel, The Da Vinci Code, which claimed that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were in fact married and then had a child together. It also leads people to think that the church covered up this whole ordeal for the own purposes. Beliefnet did a survey and 19% of people said they in fact believed that Mary Magdalene is Jesus' wife.
What he wants to do is present the historical facts to his viewers on the topic. He mentions how that isn't easy because there is little evidence on the topic of whether Jesus was or wasn't married. Then he goes on to describe the evidence in the New Testament. He mentions a book called Was Jesus Married? The Distortion of Sexuality in the Christian Tradition, by William E. Philips. This books wants its readers to believe that the silence in the New Testament supports the side of Jesus being married. Then he talks about the unmarried Jewish men during that time and in particular the group of Essenes who didn't marry by choice because the felt they had a different calling.
Rev. Dr. Roberts then goes into detail about Mary Magdalene in the New Testament and the different Gospels associated with her. Through out the New Testament there are many Marys mentioned including Mary who is Jesus' mother, Mary Magdalene, and Mary from Bethany.Jesus' first encounter with Mary Magdalene was on his preaching mission. The only thing unusual with this was usually women weren't included with the followers. The next encounter was between her a Jesus was at the crucifixion. She was one of the women who observed it. Mary Magdalene also was at the tomb when they women found it empty. There isn't any part of the the New Testament that says the two are married.
He also talks abut the reasons to why Jesus may have not been married at the time. According to some, one reason could be that it was wrong for him to have sexual intimacy with his wife. Another reason he didn't marry may be because of the complications of having a child and fatherhood. He wasn't fit for it because he was traveling all over the place and it wouldn't be a good environment for a family. Jesus also wouldn't need distractions from what his main purpose on Earth was.

He thinks that anyone who says Jesus was married it just making it up because there isn't any record of it .
Was Jesus Married to Mary Magdalene? The Bible offers proof of it.

An unsolved mystery website tries to show people the reason or different examples of how Jesus could be married. It then looks at different situations in the Bible and interprets them using different traditions in the Jewish culture and Hebrew Law.
In the first example or scenario it talks about St. John, 2 chap., verses 2-8. It is during a wedding and Jesus and Mary (his mother) are giving the servants orders. According to Hebrew law and courtesy to the groom, only the groom and his mother can give orders to the servants. This scenario doesn't prove Jesus was the groom but it doesn't present the opportunity.
Jesus is also referred to as a teacher through out the Bible, according to Hebrew law, only married men can be teachers. Being a teacher also includes teaching religion. During those days people wouldn't listen to people who weren't married or let them teach their children. Allowing him to teach could either mean he was married or the people ignored the laws and let him continue teaching.
In the Bible St. Mark, Chap. 16, verse 1 it talks about Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Salome coming to anoint Jesus after he was crucified. Again according to Hebrew law only women who are family members can anoint anyone. This is one situation where it could prove Jesus was married.

Was Jesus Married?
This website claims that Jesus wasn't married. It starts off by saying that the Cathars were the first religious group to come out and say that Jesus was married. The Cathars are Gnostic-inspired cult who believe that war, eating meat, communion, and sex were all forms of evil. They basically thought the opposite of what Catholics are taught to believe. This website says that Jesus wasn't married, but that many groups have kept insisting that he was. They think this marriage is hidden because sex was a sin, and so Jesus couldn't have done that. It is written in The Gospel of Philip that that two of them have kissed, but kissing is a traditional Christian greeting. The Da Vinci Code are where most of the recent claims are from. It takes the claims that Gnostic and other Biblical sources and tries to rewrite history. If Jesus was in fact married it wouldn't have mattered and wouldn't have made him a sinner because married was considered sacred. But there is no mention in the Bible of a wife to Jesus.
